As part of its mission to monitor the wholesale energy markets, CRE analyses activity on the wholesale electricity markets, based in particular on the data reported by market participants under the REMIT regulation. To support the development of wholesale electricity markets and increase their transparency, particularly in the context of the end of Regulated Access to Incumbent Nuclear Electricity (Accès Régulé à l’Electricité Nucléaire Historique - ARENH), CRE publishes indicators on market activity in this document.

Key Observations for the Second Quarter of 2026

After a particularly strong start to the year, the second quarter of 2026 saw a slight decline compared to the first quarter (476 TWh traded, down 21%). However, trading volumes continued to grow year-over-year (up 4% compared to Q2 2025), and activity in June was particularly high.

It is worth mentioning that trading volumes for longer-term maturities rose sharply in June, catching up to the low activity in this segment at the start of the year. However, they remain very limited at this stage. For example, trading for Y+4 rose from 1.1 TWh in Q1 2026 to 1.8 TWh this quarter, an increase of 63.6%.
